Travel Insurance Can Leave Gaps: Five Details to Check Before You Fly

Buying travel insurance is an important step, but the policy name and headline coverage limit do not tell you everything. The details determine whether it fits the trip you are actually taking.

Start with geography. Confirm that every destination and relevant transit stop is covered. A policy suitable for one itinerary may not suit another.

Next, check trip duration. An annual policy can cover multiple holidays while still limiting the length of each individual journey. This is especially relevant for extended visits, retirement travel and long trips between Australia, Europe and North America.

Australia’s Smartraveller insurance guidance recommends reviewing destinations, trip length, activities, health and valuables when choosing coverage.

The third detail is medical history. Answer the insurer’s questions fully and ask for clarification when a condition’s treatment is unclear. Having a condition under control does not necessarily mean it falls outside the policy’s definition of a pre-existing condition.

Fourth, examine your activities. Skiing, scuba diving, motorcycle riding, cruises and certain hikes may require additional coverage. An activity that feels ordinary on holiday can have a specific insurance definition.

Finally, check baggage limits and exclusions. A generous total allowance may still include a much smaller limit for an individual camera or laptop. Keep receipts or other ownership evidence, as explained in the CHOICE travel insurance buying guide.

Ask the insurer to explain unclear wording before purchasing. Save its response alongside your policy and emergency contact details.

The useful comparison is how well each policy covers your itinerary, not simply which premium is lowest.
