Your Passport Hasn’t Expired, but It Could Still Stop Your Trip

A passport can be valid on your departure date and still fail to meet your destination’s entry requirements. For international travelers, checking the expiry date is only the beginning.

ome countries require several months of validity beyond arrival or planned departure. The exact requirement depends on the destination, your nationality and sometimes your immigration status. There is no universal six-month rule that applies to every journey.

Australia’s Smartraveller passport guidance warns that validity requirements can also affect transit stops. A brief connection should therefore be included in your document checks, even when you do not plan to leave the airport.

This matters for Americans connecting through Europe, Canadians heading to Asia and Australians taking long journeys with multiple stopovers.

Before paying for flights, check the official entry requirements for every country on the itinerary. Confirm whether you need a visa or travel authorization, and use the passport you intend to present when completing applications.

Physical condition matters too. Serious damage, missing pages or an unreadable identification page can create problems even when the passport has years left before expiry.

The Government of Canada’s travel checklist recommends checking passport validity and visa requirements well ahead of departure. It also advises leaving copies of important documents and your itinerary with someone you trust.

Make document checks part of the booking process. Discovering a problem while comparing flights leaves time to solve it. Discovering the same problem at check-in can mean losing the journey entirely.
