Flight cancellations and delays are affecting passengers across Italy as air traffic controllers stage a nationwide strike.

Travelers flying to, from or within Italy are facing major disruption on September 30 as air traffic controllers take industrial action.

The strike is scheduled from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. local time and involves air traffic control operations across the country, according to Travel Monitor.

ITA Airways has cancelled around 29 percent of its scheduled flights as a result of the disruption. The impact includes domestic and international services, while passengers using other airlines could also face delays.

The industrial action involves ENAV operations nationally, as well as facilities in Bologna, Bari, Naples and Milan Linate.

Passengers with flights scheduled during the affected period are being advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport. Travelers with connecting flights should also allow additional time because delays can continue after the official strike period ends.

ITA Airways is allowing eligible affected passengers to change their bookings or request refunds under its disruption policy.

Italy remains one of Europe's busiest tourism destinations, meaning even a strike lasting several hours can have a significant impact on airports and connecting flights across the continent.

Travelers planning trips through Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna and other major Italian airports should monitor their airline apps and airport departure boards throughout the day.
