Japan has been named the world’s leading travel and tourism destination for 2026, highlighting the country’s growing global appeal.

The latest ranking points to Japan’s strong infrastructure, cultural attractions and visitor experiences.

Japan has taken the top position in the World Economic Forum’s 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index, moving ahead of some of the world’s most popular destinations. The result highlights the country’s strong position in the global tourism industry and its ability to attract travelers looking for culture, nature, history and modern experiences.

According to the World Economic Forum, tourism conditions have improved across much of the world. The 2026 index found that 92% of the 110 economies included in the report improved their score compared with 2024. Japan ranked first overall, while the United States, Spain, Australia and France were among the other countries occupying the top positions.

Japan’s appeal comes from its combination of traditional and modern attractions. Visitors can experience historic temples, traditional neighborhoods and ancient cultural sites while also exploring modern cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. The country is also known for its mountain landscapes, seasonal scenery and distinctive food culture.

Another important factor is Japan’s tourism infrastructure. The country has an extensive rail network, highly developed cities and a wide range of accommodation options, making it easier for international visitors to travel between major destinations.

The rise of Japan also reflects a broader change in global travel. Travelers are increasingly interested in experiences that combine culture, nature and local traditions rather than simply visiting famous landmarks. Japan offers all three, from historic towns and temples to mountain regions and coastal destinations.

However, the World Economic Forum also warned that the growth of international tourism creates new challenges. Rising costs, infrastructure pressure, workforce shortages, climate-related disruption and geopolitical uncertainty could affect destinations as visitor numbers continue to increase.

For Japan, the challenge will be maintaining its popularity while ensuring that tourism remains sustainable for local communities.

With its combination of culture, technology, history and natural beauty, Japan is expected to remain one of the world’s most attractive destinations. Its number-one position in the 2026 ranking further strengthens its reputation as a must-visit country for international travelers.
