Jaguar has finally revealed the production version of its dramatic new electric flagship, and this is far more than the launch of another luxury car.
The Jaguar Type 01 represents one of the biggest gambles in the company’s history.
Unveiled in New York on October 6, the four door electric Grand Tourer is the first production model of Jaguar’s completely reinvented era. The company describes it as the most powerful, aerodynamic and technologically advanced Jaguar it has ever produced.
And the numbers are serious.
Type 01 produces up to 1,030 PS, can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in approximately 3.2 seconds and offers up to 450 miles of driving range, depending on specification and testing standard. Its 850 volt electrical system can add as much as 200 miles of range in about 13 minutes when connected to a suitable rapid charger.
But performance may not be the biggest talking point.
Jaguar has deliberately created a car that looks radically different from its previous models. A long bonnet, extremely low roofline, huge 23 inch wheels and an almost monolithic body give the Type 01 proportions unlike most modern electric cars.
Even the rear is unusual, with Jaguar using a glassless tailgate as part of the new design language. Door handles, sensors and the deployable rear spoiler remain hidden until they are needed.
The dramatic styling is already dividing opinion.
Germany’s Handelsblatt reports that early online reactions have ranged from people calling the car “beautiful” to others comparing it with generic modern electric vehicles. The controversy follows Jaguar’s heavily debated brand reinvention, which began attracting worldwide attention in 2024.
The stakes are unusually high.
Jaguar effectively paused much of its previous model range while preparing for a transformation toward more exclusive electric luxury cars. Handelsblatt reports that the Type 01 is expected to cost around £130,000, approximately €153,500, placing it firmly in the premium luxury market.
Jaguar says orders will open at the beginning of 2027, with the first customer deliveries expected during the second half of the year. The vehicle was designed, engineered and will be built in the United Kingdom on the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture platform.
The name itself explains how dramatically Jaguar views the transition.
“Type” connects the vehicle with historic cars such as the E Type. The 0 represents zero tailpipe emissions, while 1 identifies it as the first model of an entirely new generation.
For Jaguar, therefore, Type 01 is not simply a new electric car.
It is an attempt to reinvent one of Britain’s most famous automotive names, and its success or failure could determine what Jaguar looks like for the next generation.
