Where Is Princess Marie?

Questions are growing in Denmark over Princess Marie's absence from royal engagements, but official records show she remains in Washington with Prince Joachim and their children.

Questions about Princess Marie of Denmark have suddenly intensified after Danish and German media focused on her limited public presence in Denmark during 2026.

The 50 year old royal has spent much of the year away from Denmark while living with her husband, Prince Joachim of Denmark, and their children in Washington, D.C.

German magazine GALA described Marie as appearing to have "disappeared" from Danish royal life, while BUNTE reported criticism over how rarely she has been seen fulfilling engagements in Denmark.

Despite the dramatic language surrounding the story, there is no evidence that Princess Marie is actually missing.

The Danish Royal House continues to list her as a member of the royal family and officially states that she lives in Washington with Prince Joachim and their children.

Why is Princess Marie living in the United States?

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie moved to Washington in 2023 with their two children, Count Henrik and Countess Athena.

Joachim took up a position connected with the Danish Embassy as defence industry attaché.

The family's stay in the United States was subsequently extended, with Joachim's assignment scheduled to continue until August 2027.

That means the couple's residence outside Denmark is neither unexplained nor unexpected.

The Danish Royal House currently lists Washington as Princess Marie's official residence.

Prince Joachim's official royal biography also confirms his continuing role within Denmark's royal family and his place in the line of succession.

So why are people asking where Marie is?

The controversy concerns her public visibility rather than her physical whereabouts.

According to GALA, Marie has undertaken very few engagements in Denmark during 2026 despite retaining a number of patronages and responsibilities connected with Danish organizations.

That has prompted questions about how those responsibilities can be fulfilled while she lives thousands of kilometres away in the United States.

BUNTE reported similar criticism on September 29, noting that Marie and Joachim have now lived away from the Danish royal court for more than three years.

The Danish Royal House has not provided a detailed public explanation in response to the latest media criticism.

The lack of comment has helped fuel speculation.

Marie still has official royal patronages

Princess Marie remains connected to a substantial number of organizations in Denmark.

When the Danish Royal House reorganized royal patronages following the accession of King Frederik X, Marie retained 13 existing patronages and accepted several additional responsibilities.

These include the Danish Dyslexia Association, Hjernesagen, Autism Denmark and the Danish Epilepsy Association.

She also became patron of Prince Henrik School and Stop Wasting Food.

Her work has traditionally focused on issues including food waste, health, disabilities and cultural relations between Denmark and France.

That continued portfolio is one reason her physical absence from Denmark has attracted attention.

The palace still includes Marie prominently

Any suggestion that Princess Marie has quietly left the Danish royal family is contradicted by the Royal House's own website.

Its current royal family page includes an official 2026 gala portrait of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie alongside King Frederik X, Queen Mary, Crown Prince Christian, Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte.

Marie also retains the title Her Royal Highness Princess Marie of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat.

Her official biography remains active on the Royal House website and details her patronages, education, family and residence.

There has been no official announcement that her royal status has changed.

Joachim and Marie have faced royal controversy before

The latest attention comes after several turbulent years for Prince Joachim's branch of the Danish royal family.

In 2022, then Queen Margrethe II announced that Joachim's four children would lose their titles as princes and princesses from January 2023.

They instead became Counts and Countess of Monpezat.

The decision affected Nikolai and Felix, Joachim's sons from his first marriage, as well as Henrik and Athena, his children with Marie.

Joachim publicly expressed disappointment over the decision, saying his children had been given only limited notice about the change.

The Royal House said at the time that the decision was intended to allow the grandchildren greater freedom to shape their own lives without the obligations associated with membership of the royal institution.

The episode nevertheless generated widespread reports of tension inside the family.

Their Washington life is temporary

Joachim and Marie's life in America is not currently expected to be permanent.

Earlier reports had indicated that Joachim's diplomatic assignment would keep the family in Washington until August 2027.

More recent reporting in 2026 has indicated plans for the family eventually to return to Denmark.

Their children have also built their daily lives around the United States.

Count Henrik and Countess Athena have attended school while living in Washington.

The official royal website currently lists Henrik as 17 and Athena as 14, while Marie and Joachim continue to be recognized as their parents within the Danish royal family.

Marie was seen with her family earlier this year

Princess Marie has not vanished from public life completely.

In May, she joined Joachim and other members of their family for Countess Athena's confirmation.

Athena was photographed with her parents and her three brothers, Nikolai, Felix and Henrik, during the family celebration.

Those appearances undermine suggestions of an unexplained disappearance.

The current controversy instead centers on how often Marie is carrying out official duties in Denmark while based in Washington.

Why the story is attracting attention now

Royal families operate partly through visibility.

Patronages traditionally involve attending events, meeting organizations and publicly supporting causes.

Marie retaining Danish patronages while spending most of her time in America therefore creates an unusual arrangement.

The situation becomes more noticeable when compared with the highly visible schedules of King Frederik and Queen Mary.

Marie occupies a different position, however.

She is married to the King's younger brother rather than being part of the central working royal couple, and her family's residence in Washington is connected to Joachim's official Danish defence role.

That context is important when interpreting the criticism.

Has Princess Marie disappeared?

No.

Based on currently available official information, Princess Marie remains a member of the Danish royal family, remains married to Prince Joachim and continues to live with her family in Washington.

The Danish Royal House continues to list her publicly and displays a new official portrait of Marie and Joachim dated 2026.

What has changed is her visibility in Denmark.

That reduced public presence, combined with her continuing royal patronages and the palace's limited response to recent criticism, has created the questions now surrounding her.

For the moment, the mystery is therefore less "Where is Princess Marie?" and more "Why is one of Denmark's princesses being seen so rarely in Denmark?"
