An unusual security alarm caused tension at Nuremberg Airport in Germany on Tuesday, October 13th, after a passenger plane from Greece broadcast a signal used in aircraft abduction cases.
According to the German newspaper BILD, authorities temporarily suspended operations at the airport, while German Air Force's Euroflying aircraft rose to escort the plane to the runway.
The company Corendon Airlines flight number XR456 was travelling from the Greek island of Corfu to Nuremberg.
According to agency NEWS5 and the Nordbaern newspaper of pilots had transmitted code 7500, which is used in the international aviation to signal the hijacking of a plane or illegal intervention in flight.
It is reported that radio communication with pilots had ended over a period of time, prompting the immediate reaction of German authorities.
The plane landed safely around 12:16, while numerous police units, firefighters and members of the SEC Special Forces were deployed at the airport.
Passengers were held temporarily within the aircraft until the authorities completed security checks.
At 1: 20 p.m., Bavaria police announced that the raids had not revealed any threats and that the situation was under control.
According to the Associated Press, the incident caused delays in six flights, while two aircraft approaching Nuremberg were diverted to other airports.
The code of kidnapping has not yet been explained. Authorities are reviewing the circumstances, while German media report that such signals may even be accidentally activated.
The event took place just hours after three pilots had reported the presence of a suspected facility as fears in airspace near the airport.
The police also used a helicopter to search the facility but failed to locate it.
Authorities have not confirmed any link between the two incidents.
