The 71-year-old Pope will undergo surgery in the lungs, while the Vatican says the problem has been revealed in a routine check.

Pope Leo is expected to be hospitalised on Tuesday, October 13th, for surgery aimed at removing a small nodule in the lungs.

According to Reuters agency, the Vatican confirmed that the change has been identified at an early stage during a routine medical examination. Authorities have provided no details about the nature of the nodul.

Despite the planned intervention, the pope continued his regular activities Monday, holding meetings with religious representatives and charitable organisations.

Doctors estimate that many pulmonary nodus are nondominate, but their characteristics determine whether monitoring, biopsy, or surgical surgery is required.

According to Reuters, the recovery period could last about a week, though it will depend on performance after the operation.

During his absence, some Vatican public activities will be directed by other cardinals. The mass, scheduled for Wednesday at St. Peter's Square, is expected to be led by Cardinal Louis Tagles.

The announcement has attracted international attention because the pope's health remains a matter of importance to the Catholic Church and millions of believers worldwide.

The Vatican is expected to provide further information after the intervention.
