A Flydubai co pilot stabbed the captain and apparently tried to crash a Boeing 737 carrying 172 people to Tel Aviv, Israeli authorities say.

A Flydubai passenger flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv plunged thousands of feet after a violent confrontation erupted inside the cockpit on Wednesday, September 30, in an extraordinary aviation emergency that Israeli officials say could have ended in disaster.

The aircraft, Flydubai flight FZ1073, was carrying 172 people, including 169 Israeli citizens, when the co pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and apparently attempted to crash the plane, according to Israeli Prime Minister .

Passengers and Flydubai crew members intervened, subdued the co pilot and helped regain control of the aircraft.

Other qualified pilots who were travelling aboard the flight then took control and safely diverted the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.

All passengers survived.

The suspected attacker was arrested by Saudi authorities, while two crew members were taken to hospital.

The motive remains unknown, and has urged against speculation while authorities investigate the incident.

What happened on Flydubai flight FZ1073?

Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday morning for Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv.

For much of the journey, the flight appeared normal.

That changed dramatically as the aircraft approached Israel.

According to Netanyahu, one of the pilots stabbed the other inside the cockpit and apparently attempted to crash the aircraft with everyone aboard.

Netanyahu said a passenger and crew member managed to enter the cockpit and neutralize the attacking pilot.

Additional Flydubai pilots travelling on the flight then helped stabilize the aircraft and ultimately landed it safely.

Flydubai has confirmed that an altercation occurred on the flight deck but has not endorsed conclusions about the attacker's motive.

The airline said the underlying reasons for the incident remain unknown and are subject to a formal investigation.

That distinction is important.

Israeli officials have described the incident as an apparent attempt to deliberately crash the aircraft, but investigators have not yet announced a final determination about motive.

Plane plunged thousands of feet

Flight tracking data illustrate how serious the emergency became.

According to Reuters, Flightradar24 data showed the aircraft descending nearly 14,000 feet in approximately 30 seconds during the incident.

Associated Press reporting based on flight tracking data showed the Boeing descending from around 33,000 feet to approximately 17,000 feet within about one minute before making an erratic turn near the Jordanian border.

CBS News reported that BBC analysis of flight tracking data showed the aircraft losing more than 17,000 feet in approximately two minutes.

The precise figures vary depending on the measurement period used, but the data consistently show an exceptionally rapid loss of altitude.

Passengers described terrifying scenes inside the cabin.

One passenger, Miryam Shira Ohayon, said the aircraft was effectively out of control during the confrontation.

She told reporters that passengers and crew acted after realizing the seriousness of the situation.

Passengers helped overpower the co pilot

The actions of people aboard the aircraft appear to have been critical.

Netanyahu said passengers helped Flydubai crew members gain access to the cockpit and restrain the alleged attacker.

According to passenger accounts reported by CBS News, people aboard the flight called for other pilots travelling as passengers to move toward the cockpit and help regain control.

Once the suspected attacker had been subdued, qualified crew members were able to stabilize the aircraft.

Netanyahu praised those involved, saying their actions prevented a major disaster.

The plane was then diverted away from Israel and toward Saudi Arabia.

Emergency landing in Tabuk

The Boeing 737 landed at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

The airport reported receiving a distress call from the aircraft at approximately 8:44 a.m. local time.

The aircraft landed safely at around 9:45 a.m.

All passengers were accounted for.

Saudi airport authorities said the captain and first officer received medical treatment after suffering injuries.

Saudi authorities also began investigating the incident.

Netanyahu said the suspected attacker had been arrested and was being questioned in Saudi Arabia.

Flydubai subsequently sent replacement aircraft to Tabuk to transport passengers and crew from Saudi Arabia.

Who was on the flight?

Reuters reported that 172 people were aboard FZ1073, including 169 Israeli citizens.

Israeli media initially reported varying passenger totals as authorities gathered information during the emergency.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Flydubai operates an extensive network from Dubai connecting destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The airline has operated direct flights between the United Arab Emirates and Israel since the two countries normalized diplomatic relations in 2020.

Israeli fighter jets were scrambled

The aircraft's unusual movements initially created fears that the plane might have been hijacked.

Israel scrambled fighter jets during the emergency as authorities attempted to determine what was happening aboard FZ1073.

The plane had transmitted emergency signals while changing altitude and direction.

Publicly available flight tracking information showed that the aircraft transmitted a general emergency alert.

Israeli authorities were concerned enough about the possibility of unlawful interference that military aircraft were placed on alert.

The emergency ended when the Flydubai aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia.

Was this a hijacking?

The terminology surrounding the incident has changed rapidly as new information emerged.

Early reports focused on the possibility of a hijacking because of the aircraft's emergency signals and unusual flight path.

Israeli authorities later said the event was not a conventional hijacking involving an outside attacker taking control of the aircraft.

Instead, the central allegation is that a member of the flight crew attacked another pilot inside the cockpit and apparently attempted to crash the plane.

The precise motive remains under investigation.

Flydubai has emphasized that authorities have not yet established why the cockpit confrontation occurred.

Israel calls it a possible terror attack

Some Israeli officials have publicly described the incident as terrorism.

Israeli Defense Minister called the incident an attempted terrorist attack.

Israeli security officials are investigating whether terrorism was involved and whether the suspected attacker acted alone.

However, investigators have not publicly established a motive.

For that reason, it remains premature to state as confirmed fact that the incident was terrorism.

Flydubai itself has specifically cautioned against premature speculation.

The airline's position is that investigators must determine what caused the altercation.

Co pilot reportedly arrested

Netanyahu said Saudi authorities arrested the suspected attacker after the emergency landing.

Reuters reported that an Israeli official identified the co pilot as an Omani national.

Saudi authorities are expected to play a central role in the investigation because the aircraft landed on Saudi territory and the suspect was taken into custody there.

Israel's Transport Ministry said Israeli authorities would also conduct a joint investigation involving the country's defense establishment.

Questions investigators will need to answer include what triggered the confrontation, what weapon was used, how the attacker obtained it and whether anyone else knew about or assisted in the alleged act.

How did passengers enter the cockpit?

Modern commercial aircraft cockpits are designed to be extremely difficult to access from the passenger cabin.

Security was strengthened dramatically worldwide after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

That makes the reported intervention aboard FZ1073 particularly unusual.

The confrontation, however, was already taking place between pilots who had legitimate cockpit access.

Netanyahu said a passenger and crew member managed to break into the cockpit after the situation became critical.

The exact sequence of how access was gained has not yet been fully established.

Investigators will almost certainly examine cockpit security procedures as part of the inquiry.

Where did the weapon come from?

Another major unanswered question concerns the weapon.

Authorities have not publicly established how the alleged attacker obtained the object used to stab the captain.

Reuters reported that investigators face questions about whether the weapon could have come from meal service equipment or equipment already available inside the cockpit.

Commercial aircraft contain emergency tools for legitimate safety purposes.

Investigators will need to determine exactly what was used before conclusions can be drawn about airport security screening.

There is currently no confirmed evidence that a prohibited knife was smuggled through Dubai International Airport security.

Israel orders tighter aviation security

The consequences of the incident began almost immediately.

Netanyahu ordered Israeli authorities to strengthen security procedures involving both Israeli and foreign airlines flying into Israel.

The incident is expected to place additional scrutiny on pilot background checks and aviation security procedures.

Commercial pilots already undergo extensive licensing, medical and professional screening.

Security vetting requirements vary between countries and airlines.

The extraordinary circumstances aboard FZ1073 could now trigger a broader review of whether existing safeguards adequately address threats originating from within a flight crew.

Flydubai says everyone is safe

Flydubai confirmed that all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for following the emergency landing.

The airline said its teams were working closely with relevant authorities and deployed replacement aircraft to Saudi Arabia.

The carrier has avoided making claims about the motive of the person involved.

That cautious approach reflects the early stage of the investigation.

Authorities in several countries may ultimately become involved because the flight originated in the UAE, was travelling to Israel and landed in Saudi Arabia.

The nationality of the crew members could also create additional investigative responsibilities.

Why the Dubai to Tel Aviv route matters

Direct aviation links between the UAE and Israel are relatively recent.

The two countries normalized relations through the Abraham Accords in 2020.

Direct flights quickly became an important part of the new relationship, allowing tourism and business travel between Dubai and Tel Aviv.

Flydubai became one of the airlines operating regular services between the countries.

The route also carries unique security sensitivities because of continuing conflict and political tensions across the Middle East.

Wednesday's incident therefore immediately triggered a security response far beyond a normal in flight emergency.

No passengers were killed

Despite the violent cockpit confrontation, rapid descent and emergency diversion, the most important fact is that every passenger survived.

The injured captain received medical treatment after landing.

Passengers were able to leave the aircraft safely in Tabuk.

Replacement flights were arranged.

The suspected attacker was taken into Saudi custody.

The aircraft itself will likely become an important source of evidence for investigators.

Cockpit voice recordings, flight data, communications with air traffic control and physical evidence from inside the cockpit could help authorities reconstruct exactly what happened.

Investigation could answer the biggest questions

Several critical facts remain unknown.

Investigators have not established the motive.

Authorities have not confirmed how the weapon was obtained.

The complete sequence of events inside the cockpit has not been publicly released.

It is also unclear whether investigators will ultimately classify the incident as terrorism, attempted murder, attempted destruction of an aircraft or another criminal offense.

Those distinctions matter, particularly because some of the strongest descriptions currently come from Israeli political and security officials rather than a completed investigation.

Flydubai has therefore urged the public to wait for verified findings.

A disaster avoided at 30,000 feet

What is already clear is that FZ1073 experienced an extraordinarily serious emergency.

A passenger aircraft carrying 172 people suddenly lost thousands of feet of altitude.

A violent confrontation occurred inside the cockpit.

Israeli fighter jets were scrambled.

The aircraft diverted into Saudi Arabia.

Passengers and crew intervened.

And despite the chaos, the Boeing 737 landed safely.

The investigation will determine why it happened.

For the 172 people aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, however, the immediate outcome is already known.

They survived an incident that, according to Israeli authorities, came dangerously close to becoming one of the most catastrophic aviation events in recent years.
