Air Canada is preparing to launch scheduled flights to Ho Chi Minh City in 2027 following a major expansion of air travel rights between Canada and Vietnam, potentially opening a new chapter for travelers heading between Canada and Southeast Asia.

Air Canada is attracting significant attention after Canada and Vietnam expanded their bilateral air transport agreement, paving the way for direct passenger flights between the two countries.

The development comes as interest in Air Canada surged in Google searches in Canada, with travelers looking for more information about the new aviation agreement and what it could mean for future flights to Vietnam.

The Government of Canada announced the expanded Canada–Vietnam Air Transport Agreement on September 24, confirming that the new arrangement allows airlines from both countries to significantly increase passenger and cargo services.

Under the agreement, airlines from each country will be permitted to operate up to 14 passenger-combination flights per week. If fully utilized, that capacity could theoretically support as many as two daily passenger services between Canada and Vietnam.

The agreement also provides for up to seven weekly all-cargo flights per country and includes additional flexibility for cargo operations through fifth-freedom rights.

For Canadian travelers, however, the biggest development is Air Canada's intention to launch scheduled service to Ho Chi Minh City in 2027.

According to the Canadian government and aviation industry reports, Air Canada plans to work with the relevant authorities to secure the necessary approvals for the new service.

Several crucial details have not yet been announced.

Air Canada has not officially confirmed which Canadian airport would serve as the departure point for the Vietnam route. The airline has also not released an exact launch date, flight schedule, frequency, ticket prices or aircraft type.

That uncertainty is likely one reason the announcement is generating significant interest among travelers.

Could Vancouver Become Canada's Gateway to Vietnam?

Vancouver has emerged as one of the cities attracting particular attention following the announcement.

Its location on Canada's Pacific coast and its established role as a major Air Canada gateway to Asia make Vancouver an obvious city to watch as the airline develops its Vietnam plans.

Canadian media reports have raised the possibility of a Vancouver–Ho Chi Minh City service, but travelers should note that Air Canada has not yet officially confirmed Vancouver as the Canadian origin of the route.

For now, Ho Chi Minh City is the confirmed intended destination, while the Canadian departure airport remains to be announced.

A direct connection would represent a significant change for passengers traveling between Canada and Vietnam, many of whom currently rely on connecting flights through other major Asian hubs.

Removing a connection could make journeys considerably simpler, particularly for tourists, business travelers and people visiting friends and relatives.

Why the Canada–Vietnam Agreement Matters

The new aviation agreement goes beyond tourism.

Vietnam is Canada's largest trading partner among ASEAN countries, and both governments have been working to deepen economic and diplomatic ties.

Canada and Vietnam have also elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, identifying areas including trade, investment, transportation, technology, energy, education and supply chains for increased cooperation.

Improved air connectivity could support those objectives by making it easier to move both passengers and goods between the two countries.

The expanded agreement therefore creates opportunities not only for Air Canada but potentially for other airlines interested in serving the growing Canada–Vietnam market.

With up to 14 weekly passenger-combination flights available to airlines from each country, the framework leaves room for substantial future expansion.

When Will Air Canada Tickets Go on Sale?

This remains one of the biggest questions for travelers.

Air Canada has not announced when reservations for the planned Ho Chi Minh City service will become available.

Before flights can begin, the airline will need to complete regulatory and operational preparations and obtain the necessary approvals.

Passengers should therefore be cautious about reports suggesting specific schedules or ticket prices until Air Canada formally publishes them.

What has changed is the regulatory framework.

The expanded agreement now provides the aviation rights needed to support direct passenger services between Canada and Vietnam, removing an important barrier to establishing regular nonstop connectivity.

For Air Canada, Vietnam would also represent another important addition to its expanding international network and strengthen its presence in the Asia-Pacific market.

For passengers, attention will now turn to the airline's next announcement.

The three details travelers are waiting for are straightforward: which Canadian city will get the route, when the first flight will depart, and when tickets will finally go on sale.
