October 2026 may bring a combination of warm autumn days, rainfall, and lower temperatures in Europe and North America.
According to data from European seasonal models, most of the European continent tends to register average temperatures higher than normal this month.
The analysis published by Season Forecasts, which compares the projections of ECMF, Met Office, Météo-French and other meteorological centres, shows that models favour a relatively mild October on the continental scale.
However, this does not mean that each day will be warm.
Seasonal forecasts describe average trends of temperature and rainfall, not precise weather conditions per day.
In northern and central Europe, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, the weather of October can be marked by the alternative to soft periods with weather fronts, rainfall, and wind.
In southern Europe, including Italy, Spain, and Greece, temperatures usually remain more suitable for outdoor activities than in the northern part of the continent. However, even the Mediterranean region can face intense rainfall episodes during autumn.
Seasonal models compared by Season Forecasts also show an average flood signal on normal in Europe during October, but their distribution could vary significantly from country to country.
In the United States, the situation is more complex.
U.S. Klimma Forecast Center ( NOAA Climate Protection Center predicts the highest probability of temperatures above normal in large parts of the US during October, November and December.
However, this is a quarterly prediction and does not guarantee temperatures on normal in each region throughout October.
A major factor is climate phenomenon El Niño, which is gaining strength in the Pacific Ocean.
According to the NOAA, the conditions of El Niño are already present and are expected to affect atmospheric circulation in the coming months, especially with the approach of winter.
For October 17th to 30th, forecasting NOAAA shows higher potential for below normal rainfall in a vast area from the Northern Plains to the northeast of the United States. In parts of the southwest, signals favour more rainfall.
These are climate probability and not guarantee that a region will remain without rain or experience storms.
In Canada temperatures are expected to vary significantly between southern and northern regions, where days become increasingly cold as November approaches.
For travellers, October remains a month of various possibilities.
Mediterranean destinations can still offer soft days, while in northern Europe the lowest temperatures and longer nights create typical conditions of late autumn.
Meteorological experts recommend that those planning trips not only rely on monthly predictions but check the short-term updates several days before departure.
The European Centre for Meterological Forevisions (ECMWF) explains that seasonal forecasts show the probability that temperatures or rainfall will be above, near or below climate normal.
This means that even in a month more warm than usual, there may be cold days, heavy rainfall, or strong winds.
For the rest of October 2026, the overall picture favours a relatively mild autumn in Europe and changing conditions in North America.
But to know when the rain will rain or how low temperatures will be in a certain city, updated daily predictions remain the most reliable source.
