Weather conditions on Monday, October 5 will vary dramatically across North America, Europe and Australia, with several regions facing potentially disruptive rain while others enjoy unusually warm autumn weather.
In the United States, the National Weather Service says locally heavy rainfall will continue across southern Texas and northern Florida, while an October heatwave remains firmly established across central and southern California.
Tropical moisture interacting with a slow moving front is expected to generate numerous showers and thunderstorms across northern Florida and southern Georgia.
The Weather Prediction Center warns that some storms could produce locally heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding. Flood watches remain active in vulnerable areas.
California faces the opposite problem.
Unseasonably hot weather will continue across central and southern parts of the state as the October heatwave stretches into the new week. Residents and visitors should remain alert to heat related risks, particularly during the warmest afternoon hours.
Farther north and east, a cold front will bring a noticeably more autumnal feel to the Great Lakes and northeastern United States.
UK starts mixed
Britain enters Monday with a north south weather divide.
The Met Office forecasts a largely dry day with sunny spells across southern and eastern England after early fog clears.
London could reach around 21°C, making conditions relatively mild for early October.
Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and parts of Wales will see more cloud, with patchy rain expected. The rain could become persistent around northwestern hills.
No UK weather warnings are currently in force for Monday, according to the Met Office.
Conditions are expected to become more unsettled from Tuesday as rain moves southeast across the country.
Heavy rain remains a concern in southern France
France will also see a significant regional contrast.
Météo France says disturbed conditions are continuing around the Gulf of Lion, with rain affecting parts of southern France on Monday.
Rainfall could become more intense during the day, following a period of thunderstorms and heavy precipitation across southern areas over the weekend.
Travelers around the Mediterranean coast should monitor local forecasts closely, particularly where intense rain could produce rapid changes in road conditions.
Northern France is expected to experience generally calmer weather.
Dense fog possible across Germany
Germany begins Monday under predominantly high pressure, but early morning visibility could become a problem.
The German Weather Service, DWD, says fog will develop in several areas overnight and into the morning, with visibility locally dropping below 150 meters.
Drivers should be particularly cautious during the morning commute.
Southern Germany also has a small risk of isolated showers or thunderstorms extending from the Swabian Jura toward the Alps. These could bring brief heavy rainfall and wind gusts of around 55 kilometers per hour.
Northern coastal areas could also experience isolated strong gusts later Monday.
Elsewhere, conditions should be considerably calmer.
Frankfurt is forecast to enjoy clear weather with temperatures reaching about 23°C after an overnight low near 12°C.
Australia sees showers and storm risk
Australia is already well into Monday, with showers affecting parts of New South Wales.
Sydney is forecast to reach approximately 23°C with one or two showers, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. Newcastle could reach 24°C, while Coffs Harbour is expecting showers and a maximum near 25°C.
Parts of northern New South Wales face a chance of thunderstorms later Monday.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the Northern Rivers region will be partly cloudy with a medium chance of showers and possible thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures should reach the mid to upper 20s.
Conditions could become more dangerous on Tuesday, when thunderstorms in the region may turn severe and potentially produce damaging winds and large hail.
Monday's global weather picture therefore offers almost every type of early autumn and spring condition at once.
Americans in parts of the South should watch for heavy rain and possible flash flooding, while California remains unusually hot. Southern France faces another round of potentially intense rainfall, Germany could wake to dense fog, Britain starts relatively calm but mixed, and parts of eastern Australia face showers and thunderstorms.
Anyone traveling Monday should check official local warnings before departure, particularly in areas where heavy rain, thunderstorms or dense fog could quickly affect roads and flights.
