The US Justice Department is seeking to file charges against Cassie Hutchinson, the former White House assistant who testified to Donald Trump's actions during the attack on Congress on January 6, 2021.

The US Justice Department is trying to secure a criminal indictment against Casey Hutchinson, former administration official Donald Trump, whose testimony became one of the most controversial moments of investigation into the attack on the Capitol.

According to Punchbowl News, prosecutors are considering raising charges of false statements to Congress concerning the testimony Hutchinson gave in 2022.

The Guardian reports that the investigation is being conducted by the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, an unusual involvement in a matter of this nature.

Sources quoted by the Punchbowl News say prosecutors have presented evidence to a large federal jury and are expected to bring additional witnesses and materials this month.

Hutchinson, who worked with former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified before the Congressional investigative Commission on June 28, 2022.

One of its most sensational statements was related to the claim that Trump had sought to head towards the Capitol on January 6, 2021, while his supporters were attacking the building.

Hutchinson indicated that another official had confessed to him that Trump had tried to take control of the funding of the presidential vehicle since security agents had refused to send him to Congress.

This piece of evidence has been opposed by other persons involved in the event, including officials of the American Secret Service.

However, her testimony included other information on actions and discussions within the White House on the day of the attack.

According to The Guardian, the Department of Justice has not publicly confirmed the existence of the investigation. A spokesman said the institution does not confirm or deny possible investigations.

"So far has not been announced to establish an indictment against Hutchinson". The prosecution's attempt to ensure an indictment does not mean it has been found guilty or that claims have been proven.

Development has restored debate in the United States on the use of justice institutions on issues involving opponents and former political associates of the president.

Hutchinson remains one of the most well-known witnesses to the investigation on January 6th, while the decision of the large federal jury will determine whether the prosecution attempt will be passed into the official charges phase.
