Google has signed an enormous electricity agreement with Constellation Energy as technology companies compete to secure enough power for rapidly expanding computing infrastructure.
Reuters reports that Google contracted for 3,590 megawatts of electricity in the PJM power grid, with roughly a quarter of the supply expected to come from new nuclear capacity.
The agreement is expected to support more than $4.3 billion in new investment by Constellation.
Part of that investment will increase capacity at nuclear reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The scale of the agreement demonstrates how electricity has become one of the most important resources in the technology industry's expansion.
Large computing facilities consume enormous amounts of power, creating new pressure on regional electricity networks.
Technology companies have consequently begun signing long term agreements directly with power producers.
The trend could have implications far beyond Silicon Valley, influencing electricity infrastructure, nuclear investment and power markets across the United States.
