French politics is entering an important phase ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. Former Prime Minister Francois Baroyin, an influential figure in the conservative party Les Républicains (LR), has publicly declared his support for Bruno Retaileau, former Interior Minister and presidential candidate of France.
According to French television BFMTV, support was made public during a visit to the town of Troyes, where Baroin serves as mayor.
Barojin declared there is a political path to Retaillau's candidacy, praising his experience, determination and commitment.
The French newspaper Le Parisien reports that Baroin had supported Retaiilleau's candidacy since September, but the statement in Troes marked the first time he publicly expressed his support.
Development comes at a moment when traditional French right is facing competition from other political forces, including the camp of former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe and the far-right party Rassemblement National.
According to parliamentary television Public Sénat, Baroiin said that Retailleau has the necessary qualities to create the conditions for a surprising result in the first round of presidential elections.
He also stressed the importance of representing the goalist political tradition in the upcoming elections.
However, Baroin's support does not eliminate the difficulties Retailleau's candidacy faces.
Public Sénat reports that recent polls set the conservative candidate at about 7 per cent to 10 per cent of the vote's goals, while discussions on campaign strategy exist within the party.
Baron has demanded that the presidential programme focus more on purchasing power, housing, health and security -- four issues he considers essential for French citizens.
Another important element is his distance from President Emmanuel Macro's political legacy. According to Public Sénat, Baroin has criticised leaders who have been part of the presidential camp, arguing that traditional right should present a distinct alternative.
Francisco Baroin's support gives Retaillau a known ally within the French right, but its influence on voters remains to be seen.
The 2027 presidential election will determine the successor of Emmanuel Macron, who cannot run for a third consecutive term under the French Constitution.
As elections approach, rivalry among conservatives, political centre and radical right is expected to remain one of the main topics of political debate in France.
