The Canadian government has launched a $2 billion housing - heating program. As many as 820 thousand families can benefit from financial support, while applications are expected to open in 2027.

Canada's government has announced a new national programme that will enable homeowners to benefit up to $10,000 Canadians from installing modern heating and cooling systems.

Prime Minister Mark Carney presented the initiative Thursday, October 8th, in Sherbrooke, Quebecut, announcing a federal investment of $2 billion in Canadians over the next eight years.

According to the Canadian government's official announcement, the National Heat Rebate programme aims to help up to 820 thousand families switch to more efficient electric heating systems, known as thermal pumps.

Under-level families of the national media will be able to benefit up to $10,000 Canadians, while other owners who meet conditions can receive $2,000.

According to CBC and Global News, the programme is expected to start early in 2027, while the final benefits criteria have not yet been published.

Federal support can also be combined with existing province subsidies, further reducing the cost of installation.

The government estimates that families currently using oil, propane, or old electric heating systems can save an average of over $1,400 a year after crossing into thermal pumps.

These devices serve both winter heating and summer cooling, reducing the need for separate climateization systems.

One of the innovations of the program is simplification of procedures. According to government documents, applicants will not be required to audit energy before or after installation.

Authorities aim to adopt applications within 24 hours through an electronic platform. However, this deadline remains the target of the programme and not a guarantee for any application.

The program is designed especially for owners to replace heating systems after a defect or when existing equipment is approaching the end of use.

According to Canadian government data, more than 80 percent of the replacements of heating systems occur after unexpected damage, when families are often forced to make quick and costly decisions.

But not every owner will automatically benefit. Equipment should be part of the official list of acceptable products, and each person can receive only one subsidy from this program.

When can citizens apply?

Applications have not been opened yet. The government has created an official site where citizens can register to receive reports on the starting date and final conditions.

The initiative comes at a time when energy costs and living expenses continue to be a concern for many Canadian families.

For the Carney government, the programme is part of a broader strategy to modernise one million residences, lower energy bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, for apartment owners, the main question remains how fast applications will be opened and which families will qualify for the maximum support of $10,000.
