What began as a late night drive to hospital turned into an extraordinary roadside delivery for a family in France.
A woman named Alexandra gave birth to her son inside a car in Escource, in the Landes department, after her contractions intensified so quickly that her family realized they would not reach the maternity hospital in time.
According to French newspaper La Dépêche, the family stopped on the village square, where Alexandra delivered the baby with her partner and mother beside her while medical professionals guided them by telephone.
Both mother and baby were later taken to hospital and were reported to be doing well.
It Started With a Contraction at 11:10 PM
Alexandra, who is nearly 30, had spent the day with her 16 month old daughter and had experienced some contractions.
After going to sleep, however, she was awakened by a much stronger contraction at around 11:10 PM.
She quickly realized that labor had begun.
Her sister came to look after her young daughter, while Alexandra's mother arrived to drive her and her partner toward the maternity hospital.
The problem was the distance.
Their journey was expected to take approximately one hour, according to La Dépêche.
Alexandra's mother reportedly suspected almost immediately that they might not make it in time.
The Baby Was Coming Too Quickly
As the car continued toward the hospital, Alexandra's contractions became increasingly intense.
Eventually, she realized that the birth was imminent.
The family abandoned the attempt to reach the maternity ward and stopped the car at the town hall square in the small village of Escource.
Alexandra remained in the back of the vehicle, where the presence of her older daughter's child seat made the already difficult situation even more complicated.
She contacted France's emergency medical service, SAMU, and was connected to a doctor who guided the family through what happened next.
Phones Became Their Lights
There was no delivery room and no hospital lighting.
Instead, Alexandra's mother and partner used their mobile phones to illuminate the inside of the car.
The delivery then happened remarkably quickly.
According to La Dépêche, Alexandra pushed only twice before the baby was born.
Her partner caught their newborn son.
But there was another frightening moment.
The baby's umbilical cord was around his neck. Alexandra instinctively pulled her newborn toward her and held him close.
Then came the crucial sign everyone had been waiting for.
The baby was breathing.
The medical team guiding the family over the phone reportedly applauded when they realized the delivery had been successful.
Baby Léo Arrived at 12:25 AM
The newborn boy was named Léo.
He arrived at approximately 12:25 AM, weighing 3.5 kilograms and measuring 51 centimeters.
Mother and baby were subsequently transported to the maternity hospital, where both were reported to be in good condition.
The entire sequence, from Alexandra waking with the powerful contraction to Léo's birth, unfolded in little more than an hour.
A Rare Birth for the Small French Village
Léo's arrival also gave Escource an unusually memorable entry in its local records.
The village has a population of only around 824 people, according to La Dépêche.
The previous birth recorded in the commune occurred in 2017, when another family had planned a home birth.
Before that, the previous local birth dated back to 1987.
For Alexandra and her family, however, statistics were understandably the last thing on their minds.
A routine drive to the maternity hospital had become an unexpected midnight delivery inside a car, illuminated by mobile phones, with a doctor helping from the other end of a telephone.
And after an extraordinary journey, baby Léo arrived safely.
