After 44 years of membership, Sven Müller is leaving the CDU. Müller is the spokesman and director of the organisation of employers' associations at Mecklenburg-Vorpommer, and for decades has been part of the demographics.
The NDR reports that Müller personally confirmed the decision, claiming he continues to consider himself demographic, but no longer sees himself inside today's CDU.
The last reason he pushed towards departure relates to political developments in Sachsen-Anhalt.
According to the NDR, Müller cited the election of a regional parliament president from the AfD. The candidate had received not only AfD and BSW votes, but allegedly had secured votes from other political ranks, including the CDU.
Exactly the party's reaction to this case has angered Müller.
He criticised the CDU for not demonstrating a clear enough stance and told The NDR does not feel better at the current party. Müller described the CDU as a ship moving “pa imon”, criticising the lack of a clear political direction.
The decision comes at a particularly difficult moment for the CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommer. In the 20 September regional elections, the party received only 4.9% of the vote -- its worst historic result in this land, remaining outside the regional parliament.
However, Müller insists that his departure is not linked to election loss or to his professional position in the employers' organisation.
At the moment, it does not seem that his decision has caused a wave of evacuations. The NDR reports that Mecklenburg-Vorpommer's CDU said that in recent days it had received no further requests for leaving the party.
