233 Arrested in Massive Crackdown on Amazon Environmental Crime

An international operation targeting environmental crime has resulted in 233 arrests and exposed networks linked to illegal mining, logging and wildlife trafficking, Interpol says.

The operation covered nine countries across Latin America and the Caribbean and identified illegal deforestation affecting around 60,000 hectares.

According to the Associated Press, investigators also uncovered links involving 161 companies and dozens of individuals.

Authorities seized hazardous chemicals associated with illegal gold mining, including cyanide and mercury, while more than 1,000 live animals were recovered during operations targeting wildlife trafficking.

Officials say organized criminal groups increasingly use legitimate businesses, fraudulent permits and complex financial structures to disguise profits from environmental crimes.

The investigation highlights how destruction of the Amazon and other ecosystems is increasingly connected to international criminal networks rather than isolated local operations.

Interpol says following the money behind these networks has become a critical part of efforts to protect forests and wildlife.
