President Donald Trump has announced that the federal government will send $90 payments to more than 20 million Americans enrolled in Medicare Part B, a move that has quickly become one of the most searched topics in the United States.
According to an official White House fact sheet, the money is intended to help eligible beneficiaries offset the cost of their Medicare Part B premiums. The payments will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress funded with approximately $2 billion for improvements to the Medicare fee for service program.
Who qualifies for the $90 payment?
Most Medicare Part B beneficiaries are eligible, but the payment will not go to everyone.
The White House says people whose Medicare premiums are already paid by Medicaid will not qualify. Beneficiaries who pay an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount because of higher income are also excluded.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services confirmed that eligible beneficiaries will receive one $90 rebate in October 2026.
When will the money arrive?
For most eligible recipients, no application is required.
CMS says most payments are expected to arrive by direct deposit on or around October 8. Beneficiaries who do not receive payments electronically are expected to receive a paper check from the U.S. Department of the Treasury later in October.
The White House says mailed payments will be sent to the address beneficiaries have registered with Medicare.
Why is the government sending the money?
Trump said the payment is designed to reduce the financial burden of Medicare Part B premiums. Reuters reports that the announcement comes just weeks before the November midterm elections, when control of Congress will be decided.
The payment is separate from other rebate and payment proposals recently discussed by the administration.
For seniors wondering whether they qualify, the White House says beneficiaries can contact 1 800 MEDICARE, or 1 800 633 4227, to check eligibility. Questions about the status of an individual payment can be directed to the Social Security Administration at 1 800 772 1213.
