OpenAI is expanding the shopping experience inside ChatGPT with a new virtual try-on feature that allows users to see how clothing and accessories could look on them before making a purchase. The update is part of a broader push to make ChatGPT more useful for discovering, comparing and shopping for products online.
The new feature works by allowing users to select a clothing or accessory product and choose the “Try on” option. Users can then take or upload a selfie, after which ChatGPT generates an image showing how the selected item could look on them. OpenAI says the feature is available on both mobile and web.
The technology could change the way people browse fashion online. Traditionally, shoppers have had to imagine how an item might look based on product photos or models wearing it. Virtual try-on technology attempts to make that process more visual by creating a personalized preview.
OpenAI has also introduced a way for users to save products they are interested in. Shoppers can add products to Favorites or organize them into folders in their ChatGPT Library, making it easier to return to items later.
The update comes as technology companies increasingly combine artificial intelligence with online shopping. ChatGPT has already been expanding its product-search capabilities, allowing users to discover products, compare information and, where supported, continue toward checkout. OpenAI says product results are independently selected and are separate from advertisements.
However, the virtual try-on feature also has limitations. A generated image may not perfectly represent the real product, a person’s appearance or the way clothing will actually fit. OpenAI recommends checking the seller’s measurements, product information and return policy before purchasing.
The development highlights a wider trend in artificial intelligence: chatbots are increasingly becoming interfaces for everyday activities rather than simply tools for answering questions. Instead of opening several websites, users can increasingly ask an AI system to help them search, compare and organize information in one place.
For fashion retailers and online shoppers, virtual try-on could become an important part of digital commerce. The technology may make online shopping more interactive while also changing how consumers decide what products to buy.
As AI-powered shopping continues to develop, virtual try-on is likely to become one of the most visible examples of how artificial intelligence is moving from text conversations into visual and practical experiences.
