A dispute over bonuses is escalating at one of the chipmaker’s most important manufacturing hubs.

Workers at Micron Technology’s major manufacturing operation in Taiwan have authorized potential strike action as a dispute over employee bonuses intensifies.

Reuters reports that the union representing employees at Micron’s Taoyuan facilities received approval from members to proceed with a strike if negotiations fail.

Taiwan is a critical center of the global semiconductor industry, making any labor disruption closely watched by technology companies and investors.

Memory chips produced by companies such as Micron are used across smartphones, computers, servers, vehicles and other electronic products.

The authorization does not necessarily mean workers will immediately walk off the job. It strengthens the union’s negotiating position as discussions continue.

Micron has become one of the largest memory chip manufacturers operating in Taiwan.

The dispute comes at a time when strong demand for advanced computing hardware has increased profits across parts of the semiconductor industry.

Any prolonged disruption at a major production site could raise concerns about supply, particularly if negotiations between the company and workers deteriorate further.
