Magic: The Gathering is overhauling its booster packs next year, with exceptionally rare packs containing 14 rare or mythic rare cards.

Magic: The Gathering players will soon have a new reason to pay very close attention when opening a booster pack.

Wizards of the Coast announced Sunday that “God Packs” will be introduced across Magic Multiverse sets beginning with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set scheduled for 2027.

The company says just one in every 1,000 regular Booster Packs will be a God Pack. Instead of the usual card mix, these exceptionally rare packs will contain 14 rare or mythic rare cards, plus a special God Pack celebration card.

Collector Boosters will have even better odds. Wizards says approximately one in every 300 Collector Boosters will contain a God Pack featuring a selection of premium rare and mythic rare cards, including multiple foil cards.

The changes go considerably further.

Beginning in 2027, Play Boosters will simply be called Booster Packs. Traditional foil Japan Showcase cards will become available in regular boosters, while the chances of finding foil rare and mythic rare cards will increase.

At the same time, Wizards is removing foil common and uncommon cards from standard Booster Packs. A foil card will therefore no longer be guaranteed in every pack.

Importantly for players, the company says these changes will not increase the recommended retail price of the boosters.

The announcement has quickly attracted attention across the gaming community, with Polygon describing the returning God Packs as extremely difficult to find.

For collectors, however, that rarity may be exactly the point. Starting in 2027, opening an ordinary Magic booster could come with a tiny chance of uncovering a pack filled almost entirely with some of the game's most desirable card rarities.
