Filming of the highly anticipated sequel starring Robert Pattinson has been temporarily halted as director Matt Reeves steps away to focus on a family matter.

Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused, adding another unexpected development to one of Hollywood's most anticipated superhero sequels.

Director Matt Reeves has stepped away from the production to deal with a family matter, according to a statement from DC Studios.

“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” the studio said, according to Deadline.

DC Studios added that Reeves has its full support and that the team looks forward to continuing work on the movie soon.

Will The Batman Part II be delayed again?

That is now the biggest question for fans.

Deadline reports that it is currently too early to determine whether the production interruption will affect the movie's theatrical release.

For now, The Batman Part II remains scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 18, 2028.

The sequel has already experienced several changes to its release schedule during its lengthy development.

Filming was underway in London before production was halted. The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed that Reeves' absence is related to a family matter and described the production stoppage as temporary.

Robert Pattinson returns as Batman

Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne and Batman after starring in Reeves' successful 2022 film The Batman.

The sequel also brings back Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell, while the expanded cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance and Sebastian Koch.

Details about the story remain closely guarded.

Reeves is also a writer on the sequel alongside Mattson Tomlin, making his involvement particularly important to the production.

The original The Batman became a major global success, earning more than $770 million worldwide and establishing Pattinson's darker interpretation of the DC superhero.

What happens now?

No replacement director has been announced, and importantly, there is currently no indication that Reeves is permanently leaving the project.

The studio's statement instead suggests that filming is expected to resume once he is able to return.

There is also no confirmed date for production to restart.

Until then, the February 2028 release remains officially in place.

For Batman fans who have already waited years for the sequel, however, the latest production pause creates one more question: will Gotham's return to the big screen be delayed again?
