The battle for the biggest movie in cinema history has changed leaders again.
“Avengers: Endgame” has overtaken “Avatar” to reclaim the title of highest grossing movie ever following another successful theatrical release.
Variety reports that “Endgame” has now generated approximately $2.925 billion worldwide.
“Avatar” stands just behind it at about $2.923 billion.
The two films have repeatedly exchanged the record because both have returned to cinemas after their original releases.
Marvel and Disney brought “Endgame” back to theaters as part of the buildup to “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is expected to become one of the year’s biggest releases.
The latest “Endgame” run added more than $100 million to its lifetime box office total.
The record could still change again.
“Avatar” has previously reclaimed the top position through theatrical re releases, meaning the difference between the two films remains extremely small.
For now, however, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are officially back on top of the worldwide box office.
