Steve Reich has turned 90, but one of modern music's most influential composers has little interest in treating the milestone as an ending.
Instead, he is still composing.
In an interview with Reuters, Reich reflected on more than six decades of music while discussing his latest piece, "In All Your Ways," which premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival.
The American composer helped pioneer minimalism and has influenced generations of classical musicians as well as artists far outside the traditional concert hall.
His latest work also shows that Reich is still experimenting.
He described changing his normal creative process and adding a slower movement after much of the composition had already taken shape.
Reich also discussed technology and artificial intelligence.
Despite using digital tools during parts of his career, he remains skeptical about whether computer generated music can reproduce the intuition behind human composition.
His influence reaches well beyond classical music, and Reich has previously expressed admiration for musicians including Radiohead and Paul McCartney.
At 90, however, the composer appears less interested in looking backward than in continuing the process that defined his life.
Making the next piece.
