The Las Vegas Aces defeated the Indiana Fever 102-85 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. A’ja Wilson delivered a dominant performance, finishing with 38 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks while matching her postseason career highs in both points and rebounds.
Wilson made 15 of her 19 field-goal attempts and controlled the game on both ends of the floor. Her performance sent a clear message that the defending champions are ready for another deep playoff run.
According to the official Las Vegas Aces game recap, Jackie Young added 21 points and 10 assists, while Chelsea Gray recorded 14 points and eight assists. Jewell Loyd contributed another 10 points from the bench.
Caitlin Clark’s Double-Double Was Not Enough
Indiana had five players score in double figures, but the Fever could not contain Las Vegas’ high-powered offense. Aliyah Boston led Indiana with 18 points, while Caitlin Clark finished with 15 points and 10 assists.
Turnovers and defensive problems proved costly for the Fever. Las Vegas scored 28 points from Indiana’s 17 turnovers, making a comeback increasingly difficult as the game progressed.
Clark gave Indiana’s defensive performance an “F” after the loss and admitted that the Fever also made life difficult for themselves offensively, according to the WNBA’s Game 1 recap.
However, the opening round is played as a best-of-three series, meaning the first team to secure two victories advances. Indiana now returns to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where it will have home-court support and an opportunity to force a decisive third game.
Why the Fever Can Still Turn the Series Around
The Game 1 score may suggest that Las Vegas is the overwhelming favorite, but the regular-season results tell a different story. Indiana won two of its three meetings with the Aces, including two victories in Las Vegas.
The Fever finished the regular season with a 28-16 record and one of the league’s most explosive offenses. Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark combined to average 47 points per game, while Aliyah Boston remains a major presence around the basket.
Las Vegas entered the playoffs with a 31-13 record and seven consecutive victories. The Aces have championship experience, a deep roster and an in-form Wilson, but Indiana has already shown that it can cause serious problems for the defending champions.
Game 2 Could Decide Everything
Game 2 will be played in Indianapolis on September 29, with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET. The full schedule and game information are available on the official WNBA game page.
Another victory would send Las Vegas into the semifinals. An Indiana win would move the series back to Las Vegas for a decisive Game 3 on October 1.
That battle between the Aces’ championship experience and the Fever’s explosive offense is what makes this series so compelling. Wilson delivered her message in Game 1. Now it is Clark and Indiana’s turn to show whether they can keep their season alive.
