Didier Deschamps completed his 14-year adventure at the helm of France after the 2026 World Cup, leaving behind one of the most successful periods in national history.
But besides trophies and results, another aspect of his career is drawing attention to France: how much has the coach been paid all these years?
The French Portal Sportune, specialising in sports finance, has turned into attention to the evolution of Deschamps' pay, while discussions on coach contracts continue after Zinedine Zidane came.
From a modest contract to millions of euros a year
When taking over France's direction in July 2012, Deschamps entered a wage structure lower than he had previously known in club football.
Over the years, renewed contracts and international successes significantly changed his financial position.
In 2021, Sportune valued its salary of about 2.5m euros a year.
Meanwhile, in the last years of the contract, Deschamps' annual reward was estimated at around 3.8m euros gross, including other elements of his compensation package.
300 thousand euros a month
According to the French sports newspaper L'Équipe, the Deschamps fixed salary at the end of the term was 300 thousand euros gross a month, or 3.6m euros a year.
In addition to the basic salary, the coach also received income related to image rights and other bonus.
This means that his income was not limited to the monthly sum set in the contract.
However, without the complete record of each contract and paid bonus, it cannot be determined exactly how much it has earned in 14 years.
Success That Changed His Career
Deschamps led France to the world title in Russia in 2018, while four years later he again reached the World Cup final, where the French were defeated by Argentina.
He also won the League of Nations in 2021 and led France to the 2016 European Championship final.
These results strengthened his position in the federation and influenced the long succession at the top of the nationals.
Zidane receives the same wage, but under other conditions
Following Deschamps' departure, Zinedine Zidane took over from France.
According to L'Équipe's report on September 29, 2026, Zidane has maintained the same fixed salary of 300 thousand euros gross a month.
However, former Real Madrid coach has given up payment for image rights, negotiating in exchange for higher bonus for successes in international tournaments.
Comparison shows that the differences between contracts between the two trainers are related not only to the basic wage but also to the way the results are rewarded.
After 14 years at the helm of France, Deschamps leaves with an important sports heritage and a career he ranked among the paid international football trainers.
