Lionel Messi’s international career ended almost exactly as Argentina supporters would have dreamed.
The 39 year old captain scored once and created two more goals as Argentina defeated Benin 3 to 0 in his final appearance for the national team.
Reuters reports that more than 85,000 supporters packed Buenos Aires’ Monumental stadium for an emotional farewell to the player who transformed Argentina’s modern football history.
Messi assisted Nicolas Otamendi for the opening goal and later created another for Nico Paz.
He then scored from the penalty spot, taking his Argentina total to 126 international goals.
The final whistle triggered an extended celebration involving teammates, opponents, fireworks and a drone display above the stadium.
Messi leaves international football with 208 appearances, making him Argentina’s most capped player.
His career with the national team included a World Cup title and Copa America triumphs after years in which international success had repeatedly escaped him.
This time, Argentina was not asking Messi for another trophy.
It was simply saying goodbye.
