FC Bayern and Germany captain Giulia Gwinn will be sidelined for several weeks after medical examinations confirmed a torn lateral ligament in her left ankle.

FC Bayern have confirmed a significant injury setback for Giulia Gwinn after the Germany captain was forced off during the club's Bundesliga victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Medical examinations carried out in Munich on Monday revealed that the 27 year old defender suffered a torn lateral ligament in her left ankle.

Bayern confirmed the diagnosis in an official statement and said Gwinn will be unavailable for the coming weeks.

The injury occurred late in Bayern's 1:0 victory away at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Gwinn twisted her ankle during a challenge in the 83rd minute and was unable to continue. Her left ankle was subsequently bandaged on the bench before further examinations were scheduled in Munich.

The diagnosis also rules Gwinn out of Germany's upcoming international matches.

The German national team will face Australia in Karlsruhe on October 9 before playing Japan in Bremen on October 13. Bayern confirmed that Gwinn will miss both games.

The latest injury is particularly frustrating for one of Germany's most recognizable players because Gwinn has already endured several serious setbacks during her career.

She suffered two ACL tears between 2020 and 2022, affecting different knees. During the 2025 European Championship, she sustained a medial ligament injury in her left knee, while a shoulder problem later required surgery and kept her out for around three months.

Despite those setbacks, Gwinn repeatedly fought her way back into Bayern and Germany's starting lineups and had recently returned to strong form.

Her absence now leaves Bayern without one of their key defenders as the club attempts to continue an outstanding domestic run.

Saturday's victory over Frankfurt was Bayern's sixth win from six Bundesliga matches this season and extended their unbeaten league streak to 48 games. Klara Bühl scored the only goal of the match.

Bayern have not announced an exact return date for Gwinn, saying only that she will be unavailable for the coming weeks.
